Free and Open Source Software and Linux modules, EduNET.LK 2024/25

by Admin User -
Dear software engineering students and applicants

I am happy to announce the start of the 2024/25 semester modules related to Free and Open Source Software, Linux and software development. In case you are not already following a software engineering bachelors course but still keen on making a career in the IT field these modules will introduce you to a so far less know branch of the industry.

Some of you have participated in the previous semester modules and know the pattern. They come in units of a weekly live-class followed by 1 to 2 hours of homework each week. We strongly believe in learning by doing and practice.

The first live session of this season is today Tuesday, 5 November, at 20:00 LKT on video. The link to the class is The link to join the session: https://vcr.learn.ac.lk/rooms/tik-l3x-mpj-bg3/join. Access code wnsjid. The new course homepage is https://edunet.lk/enrol/index.php?id=28. You can get access by filling the signup form https://edunet.lk/login/signup.php. Make it a point to give a written out first name so that we can address you by first name. You have to use the same Gmail address as in this previous year platform. If you have a non-Gmail address please drop an e-mail to support@edunet.lk. If you know others in the same position, you may pass this invitation to them.

Maybe you are not aware that Microsoft is going to ask for money for Windows 10 updates and Windows 11 require newer machines. You can run Linux on old laptops and not only save money but also save the environment - and on top of that go deeper in to the operating system. Later we plan to build a community to help each other in switching to Linux. First, all that requires the basic knowledge in Linux that will be presented in this FOSS module.

P.S. Some FOSS and Linux advocates have promised a number of USB memory sticks with which you can install Linux on laptops and PCs in dual-boot mode or run Linux directly from the memory stick without touching the harddisk. They will be drawn randomly among those who successfully complete the module. There are also used laptops in good condition fully installed in Linux to be won by the best over all the modules.
