We EduNET.LK in coordination with BSEHons program of the OUSL will be starting the second module of our FOSS series on Tuesday, 10 December 2024 at 20:20 LKT. The subject this time is "Your own web development environment under Linux".
This module, like the first one, is an instructor-led, fully on-line workshop with multiple sessions. In this module you will set up a web development environment on your PC or laptop running the Linux operating system in a virtual environment and start developing for the web - naturally all with Free and Open Source Software!
Learning outcomes
---------------------
After successfully completing this module you can:
- install the virtualization software Oracle VirtualBox on your computer to create virtual machines
- run a the image of a Linux virtual machine we give you on your VirtualBox
- develop and test some basic web applications on your virtual machine using HTML, CSS and PHP.
Prerequisites
--------------
- You will need a good understanding of any operating system.
- You need to have a basic understanding of the world wide web.
- You will need a fairly powerful computer not older than 10 years. Minimum hardware requirements are: 4 CPU core, 4 GB RAM and 5 GB spare disk space. As the host the operating systems Windows 10 or 11, current versions of macOS and Linux are supported. Mobile devices are unsuitable.
Please note that this will be a demanding exercise for those of you who haven't have some skill in Linux. Therefore the completion of the first module or something equivalent is highly recommended, but is not compulsory. For those who haven't done the first module a self-learn version of it will go on-line simultaneously with this module.

Course completion
---------------------
For successful completion you have to earn 60% of the marks in each of the graded assignments within the given deadlines.
Those who have successfully completed will get an electronic badge.

You'll need an account on the Moodle LMS at edunet.lk. If you don't have one already, get one yourself by filling the signup form (see the attachment). You're advised to use the same name and e-mail address as given to the university.
Please note that the self-registration form accepts only Gmail addresses. If you've given a mail address from a different domain to your university, write a mail to support@edunet.lk from that mail address. We will create an account for you manually.
